Chicago
The University of Memphis Department of Theatre & Dance invites you into the sultry, scandalous world of Chicago—the classic musical that shimmers with style, satire, and showbiz razzle-dazzle. With a book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander, and lyrics by Fred Ebb, Chicago is based on the play by Maurine Dallas Watkins with script adaptation by David Thompson.
Set in the roaring 1920s, Chicago tells the story of Roxie Hart, a nightclub dancer who finds herself on trial for murder, and Velma Kelly, a vaudevillian with her own secrets and schemes. As the two women vie for the spotlight and a chance at freedom, the courtroom becomes a stage and justice takes a backseat to fame.
Directed by Max Robinson, this electrifying production features unforgettable choreography inspired by Bob Fosse and a sizzling score that includes hits like “All That Jazz” and “Cell Block Tango.” A biting satire on celebrity, corruption, and media sensationalism, Chicago is as relevant—and riveting—as ever.
